HOWTO - Upload a catalog

Follow the steps here to ensure that we keep the site clean and consistent with a data architecture that will scale for time to come.

Currently, we group by year, then catalog. So, the first step is to ensure that there is a page for the year that we are adding the catalog for.

If no page for the year exists, create one. Note that the Wiki will create a page underneath its (current) parent page. So, be sure to be in the right spot when you click add page.

Catalog Hierarchy

Just to be clear on terminology, the "Catalogs" page is the root of the catalog hierarchy.

  • Catalogs
    • 1976
    • 1981
      • 1981 - Ibanez Catalog Name
        • 1981 - Ibanez Catalog Name - Cover
        • 1981 - Ibanez Catalog Name - Artist Series
        • 1981 - Ibanez Catalog Name - Basses
        • 1981 - Ibanez Catalog Name - Blazer Series
    • 1999

The first level children of the Catalogs page are Year pages.

The first level children of the Year pages are individual catalog main pages.

Beneath each catalog main page are the child pages for that particular catalog.

Individual catalog images are uploaded as Attachments to the catalog child pages.

Steps

For this example, I am going to add the catalog from 1982 taken from http://s93105080.onlinehome.us/Ibanez-Catalogs/file.php_n=1982&p=&y=1982.html

Adding the Content

  1. Create the 1982 Year page underneath the Catalogs root page
  2. Create a catalog main page underneath 1982 with the format: <year><space><hyphen><space><Ibanez><space><catalog name>
    For exaple: 1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars
  3. Each catalog has a cover, back page and sometimes some intro pages. The next thing we do is create a child page under the catalog main page to act as a parent for the cover and intro page images 1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars - Cover. Note that the name of this child page is the same as the catalog main page with the following appended to it: <space><hyphen><space><space><Cover> (see the "Tips" section below)
    1. Place the following Wiki markup inside the body of the child page. This macro displays all attachments to the page:
      {gallery:sort=name}

  4. Click on the "Attachments" tab on the child page and upload the relevant catalog images to the page. I use the "Cover" page to contain the front and back covers and any introductory pages to the catalog that are not specific to any series or model
  5. After the Cover is done, proceed to the next child page of the same catalog. What we do here is create a child page for each 'series' in the catalog. The next logical one for this catalog is 1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars - Artist Series. Note that in this instance only a single space separates the string "Artist Series" from the final hyphen. The Cover child page is a special case. All non-Cover child pages will follow this format.
  6. Once again, add the gallery macro to the child page's body
  7. Then add the image attachments. In this example there are a few page images for Artists, so we add them all (02-07). The same steps can be performed for the Musician series
  8. Now that we have created all of the child pages, we need to add include statements for them into their parent catalog's main page. We have just created the following child pages:

    1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars -  Cover
    1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars - Artist Series
    1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars - Musician Series

    Converted into include statements, these would form the body of the catalog main page as:
    {include:1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars -  Cover}
    {include:1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars - Artist Series}
    {include:1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars - Musician Series}

  9. Click on the navigation link to return you to the catalog main page 1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars
  10. Click on the Edit tab of the catalog main page, add the include statements for the catalog's child pages, and then click the Save button. Using the include statements allows users to view the entire catalog image contents at the catalog main page rather than having to view each child page individually.
  11. Additionally, we wish to display each catalog's cover image on their corresponding Year page. We do this by placing image links in the body of the Year page, one image link for each catalog cover beneath that specific Year page.

    To continue with our 1982 example, at the time of this writing there are three (3) catalogs loaded beneath the 1982 Year page:

    1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars
    1982 - Ibanez Blazer and Studio Series Electric Guitars
    1982 - Ibanez Iceman II, Destroyer II, and Rocket Roll II Electric Guitars

    We convert these catalog main page names into references to their respective child pages and cover image file names, and then place these references in the body of the 1982 Year page:
    h3.1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars
    [!1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars -  Cover^01.jpg|width=128!|1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric
    Guitars]

    h3.1982 - Ibanez Blazer and Studio Series Electric Guitars
    [!1982 - Ibanez Blazer and Studio Series Electric Guitars - Cover^01.jpg|width=128!|1982 - Ibanez
    Blazer and Studio Series Electric Guitars]

    h3.1982 - Ibanez Iceman II, Destroyer II, and Rocket Roll II Electric Guitars
    [!1982 - Ibanez Iceman II, Destroyer II, and Rocket Roll II Electric Guitars^01.jpg|width=128!|1982
    - Ibanez Iceman II, Destroyer II, and Rocket Roll II Electric Guitars]

    As of this writing there is an issue with creating an image reference when the title of the catalog main page contains an ampersand. We are working on a solution.

    If a catalog does not have a cover image, then simply create the reference for that particular catalog as:

    h3.1982 - Ibanez Blazer and Studio Series Electric Guitars
    _No Cover Image Available_

  12. We have now completed uploading the catalog. Follow the next section ("Labeling the Content") carefully to ensure that we categorise the content correctly so it will show up in the right searches

Labeling the Content

There are 2 ways that we categorise in this Wiki: the first is to label child pages and the second is to modify the comments on the attached images to be more specific and help with searches. When in doubt just look at one of the other Catalogs to see an example

  1. Going back to the 1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars - Artist Series child page, label this with the series (e.g. 'artist') and every model name that exists in the images. Note that the model names here should not contain the color/finish and should be in lower case (e.g. ar300). Do this by clicking the 'EDIT' link (not the Edit tab) near the top of the page content, next to the Labels. Labels cannot contain spaces. I add in labels for all models mentioned in the catalog, even if there is no picture
  2. This next step is tedious, but provides a great result. It involves editing the comment on each attachment to specify what is in the picture. Go to the attachment page and edit the comment for the image attachment. Specify the model names that are shown in the pictures, including the color (e.g. 'AR105AV'). Here is the result once you are finished 1982 - Ibanez AR & MC Electric Guitars - Artist Series
  3. At this stage, I do not label the accessories

Tips

  1. The pages in the catalog hierarchy are displayed in sorted, alphabetical order. This causes the Cover child page to be displayed in the middle somewhere between Bases and Guitars. If an extra <space> is placed after the final hyphen and before the word 'Cover', the Cover child page will sort and be displayed at the top of the listing. This should make it more accessible in the catalog listings.

    For example: <Year><space><hyphen><space><Ibanez><space><Catalog Name><space><hyphen><space><space><Cover>

The catalog should be finished. Note that this will not add it to the homepage. I am working on a better layout and will update the front page later
